Medical Lab Technicians are responsible for performing chemical, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological diagnostic analyses on body fluids under the supervision of a medical technologist.  Some job duties include:  preparing specimens for analysis, monitoring tests and procedures, testing for drug levels in the blood to show a patient’s response to treatment, keeping inventory of supplies used in the laboratory, and preparing specimens for storage.  Medical lab technicians must complete a minimum of a two to four year degree that leads to a certificate or an Associate degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science.  They must be certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology or the American Medical Technologists.
